I'm moving to my Mom's blog

Yes, it's true...I like my new family, and you will now be able to read about my adventures in my Mom's blog: www.reddogblackhearse.blogspot.com

You should see my new brother....he had BAD manners the other day (I have a picture to prove it! see pictures below). I forgave him, but will gently teach him day by day.

My new Mom says my eyes melt her heart. (geez, I hope that doesn't hurt her). LOL.

She is home

I feel like going to the stationary shop and ordering birth announcements!!!!!!!!!!!

This beautiful girl joined our family over the weekend. Her foster parents, Van and Susan, are two very special people who have beautiful hearts, and who prepared Sil extraordinarily well. Thank you Van and Susan...and of course, foster brothers gorgeous Dewey and Kane.

So, Sil has swished in and plopped down...like she always knew. She has a very sweet personality...and is a good listener. Of course, whenever a new dog enters our home, there is a period of time where everyone is readjusting and making room. We see Ava being a bit naughty...Canoe being a bit insecure...and my husband making these disgustingly sweet murmers to this new dog. "Here you go, sweetheart...I have another lamb lung for you....yeessss, I know you like that beautiful." LOL!!!! He turns into this mushy James Bond. (and that is why Ava gets a little naughty...Dad is HER James Bond!) But after some time, and some normal routines, everyone will fall into place and live happily ever after, right?

We are wondering if we are going to change her name. Probably not since we have soooo many opinions, but some of the ones that have been suggested are: Lola, Nadia, Posey, Sally, Alice, Mishka, Poppy....well, you get the idea...they are all over the board. So if you're reading this, please feel free to vote for your favorite, or offer another suggestion. For now, we will continue to call her "Sil".

Many thanks to all the wonderful people who made this adoption possible...Susan and Van, Patty Winters and Suzanne Lipsom. What a great experience...SEGA is the best.
.....and Quick Silver, you will always be in my heart...you lovely girl.

Forever Home!

Sil was adopted today by the Peters family! The Peters have one greyhound, a beautiful fawn boy named Canoe. We were able to see Sil in her new home, and we think she is going to be a wonderful addition to the family. We could not be happier for the Peters and Sil. As I was going through Sil's things I found a note with instructions to post this poem on the day of her adoption.

A trip that started with uncertainty has ended in my forever home. I have found the love of a family and never again will I be alone. So many helped me along the way to see me to this joyous day. And though I may not know all their names my life will never be the same. As I fall asleep in my new bed, thoughts of you all will run in my head. Angels of mercy helped me to live and in return this love I always will give. I have won the most important race; the finish line is the love in your face.

Sil

God's speed, Sil. We love you and will miss you.

Time between blog entries goes faster than a greyhound.

Sil was sleeping and I called her over to me. She roused herself from sleep and came and put her head in my chest. I gave her a hug and kisses on top of her head. She loves to be loved.

Pig's ears, kongs, toys, and other stuff

Sil loves pig's ears, kongs, toys, cats, kids, people, small dogs, food, going outside, writing poetry, working on cures for diseases, scritches, hugs, her bed, her foster brothers, her foster parents, making it to the top of the stairs, the thought of her forever home.

All you have to do is love one thing, her.

Putting on My Shoes

When I put on my shoes in the morning I sometimes sit on the floor in the bedroom. Our boys Kane and Dewey usually see this as an invitation to come over and lean against me in some fashion. This morning as I sat on the floor and put my shoes on Sil came over and buried her head in my chest. I gave her a long hug while Dewey stood behind me and rested his head on my shoulder.

If you don't have a greyhound, please ask yourself why.

Catching Up

Sil has fallen into the routine of our house. Slippery floors are fading in the rearview mirror, and each day she gets better with the stairs. There is just one thing missing, her forever home. Sil deserves someone who will dote upon her and treat her like a princess. She is SUCH a sweet girl and right now someone out there is missing out on a wonderful greyhound. She has done perfectly with kids, small dogs, and cats. I know that she is going to miss our home and her foster brothers, but I am sure a very special home is waiting for her. If you are ready to love a beatiful black greyhound with all your heart then look at Sil. She deserves it. Do you deserve her?

Great Progress

Sil has made great progress on the stairs the past couple of days. I came in the basement with her and let her off her leash. I was busy filling up the cat's food dish and I noticed she was not near me. She was already at the top of the stairs waiting to get into the house. I was very proud.

Back from the Meet & Greet

We had a wonderful day at the Woodstock PetsMart for our monthly meet & greet. Kane and Dewey told everyone they met about their wonderul foster sister at home. Dewey has started to keep a picture of Sil in his wallet, and he showed it to every one who stopped to pet him.

As soon as we got home Kane and Dewey told Sil all about the meet & greet. She can't wait to go as an adopted greyhound and wow the public with her personality and sweetness. She must have thought about it alot while we were gone, because when I got home I found this poem in her kennel.

Dewey and Kane have left the house and here I sit quiet as a mouse. I think they have gone just down the street to be part of this thing called a meet & greet. I have to tell you it’s just not fair, I would meet and greet if I were there! I would give kisses and lots of hugs, heck I’d even give out free back rubs! I’d be so loving and so polite, it’s not in my nature to go pick a fight. People would come from all around to meet & greet the sweetest greyhound. But I must be patient here all alone, until that day I find my forever home. Then maybe my owners, knowing I am just so sweet, will take me to my own meet & greet. I would be the shining star. Oops, I have to go I hear a car…

Meet Sil's Foster brothers

Sil lives with two foster brothers, Kane and Dewey. Kane and Dewey will be at the Woodstock PetsMart today between 2 and 4 for their monthly Meet & Greet. Sil cannot make it. SEGA's policy is to not bring foster dogs to the meet & greets. However, this is your chance to meet 2 wonderful greyhounds in person, ask all the questions you want, and perhaps put an adoption application in on a really sweet black greyhound named Sil.

King Kong

Sil has discovered the pleasures of the kong and all the tasty stuffings that fill it. She is also starting to fish around in the toy chest for toys to play with. She is sweet, sweet, sweet. She has the sweetest eyes and is very patient when you give her love. She is a loving girl who will make a lucky person very happy. Is that lucky someone you?

More Poetry

I was snooping in Sil's journal again and I found this limerick she wrote:

From the track there came a greyhound,
Who ran fast across the ground.
But when it came to the stairs
Her fear was a snare
For fear of them tumbling down.

I am glad to see that she is working through her fears with her writing. This is a positive step (pun intended). We will continue to work on the stairs until she can write of her triumph. Oh, and I found one more poem:

Roses are red, violets are blue,
Can I find a forever home with you?

Stairmaster (not quite)

Sil has recovered from her surgery so well that we have resumed stair training. She is better going up the stairs than going down them. We are going to start the interior stair training in earnest this week.

She continues to be a joy with the cats and our boys. She is such a sweet girl and she really just wants to please. I found her journal under her dog bed and took a peek at it. Most of the entries were chemical formulas for some type of miracle medicine she is working on, but I did find some haiku.

Steps go up, I go down.
Slippery floor behind me.
Changes in elevation my enemy.
Gravity unconquered. I sleep.

First cockroach!

We caught Sil in her first "cockroach" today. When a greyhound cockroaches it means they are comfortable in their surroundings. We are flattered by her trust.

We also got the obligatory nose macro shot. Greyhounds have the best snouts, and when they sleep their mouths are usually agape. It is very attractive. We can only imagine she is dreaming of her forever home.

Sil is doing just fine after her spay; she shows no soreness or lack of energy. She is SO SWEET. The little girl next store was loving on her, giving her kisses and hugs, and Sil just stood there patiently and accepted the love. She has really become a champ on the slippery kitchen floor. We will pick up stair training again next week when she has had a couple more days to recuperate.

Sil is a very special girl who will make a wonderful friend for a lucky person. She deserves a forever home with someone who will appreciate her for the wonderful dog that she is.

Back home!

Sil made it through her surgery just fine. She is back at the house and is recuperating. She is on restricted activity for the next few days while she heals. She was glad to be sprung from the kennel, but not all the greys there are so lucky to have a foster home to go to. Sil asks that if anyone reading her blog would like to foster please contact SEGA.

Sil is sleeping right now, but will have me post more later in the day.

Off to be spayed

I dropped Sil off at the kennel for her spay bright and early this morning. She did not like being left at the kennel and it made me sad to leave her. I reassured her that I will be back. She has already started to bond to her new life.

As I was leaving I passed by Bohemian BTO and he smiled at me. It cheered me up a little.

Days 4/5

Sil has made more progress on the slippery kitchen floor but still needs coaxing to make it all the way across. She is getting much better on the front steps, so hopefully she can graduate to the interior stairs next week. We heard her "roo" for the first time tonight. She joined in with our boys as they watched a video on Youtube that featured rooing greyhounds. She has a lovely singing voice!

She goes to the vet tomorrow to get spayed, so she will be healing for the next few days. Sil sends her love to her adoptive parents, wherever they are. She is waiting for you!

Visitors

Day 3 - 3/31/08

So much to learn and it all goes so fast! (Maybe it is a greyhound thing!) Today was very productive and Sil made great strides. (Again a greyhound thing?!) It seems as if she has conquered slippery floors! Walking on a leash is a breeze for Sil and a pleasure for us.

Sil had visitors today and one of them mostly qualifies as a small dog. Of course, compared to greyhounds, most dogs look small to me now. Crash and Cody came for a visit and everyone had a blast. Cody is the redhead in the herd at the watering dish (Crash, not pictured, is a shepherd mix). Everyone had a blast and Sil did great with Cody.

Off to a great start

Day 2: 3/30/08
Sil slept in our room last night. After a little bit of whining she settled in and slept the entire night. She is afraid of the vinyl floor in the kitchen, so we have to coax her to walk across the slippery surface. She still is not sure about the front steps. Sil went down six steps in one bound, which was not very graceful. She has a ways to go before she tries the interior basement stairs.

She got her first taste to peanut butter and had her first pig’s ear. She liked both. We were able to get some good pictures of her for the blog page. Sil is very sweet. It is amazing to see the potential of the new dogs fresh off the track. The raw material is there; they just have to be developed to their full potential. Sil is off to a great start.

Introducing SP’s Silhouette!

Day 1: 3/29/08
Picked up SP’s Silhouette from the kennel. She is a beautiful, black, 2-year-old who is beginning her new life. If only she knew how lucky she is. She tested cat workable and small dog workable. We have 5 cats and 2 male greyhounds in our home. Here we go.

Got her home and did the introduction to our 2 hounds in the yard with muzzles on. All went very well. Only a little “snarkiness” but things quickly settled down. Some of the neighborhood children accosted us in the yard and gave her hugs and kisses, which she readily accepted. She seems to be very friendly with new people.

Since Silhouette’s name is so long, one of the girls offered her aunt’s name as a good short-name: “Sil” and Sil seems to like it.

Brought her inside (had to carry her up the front steps). After letting her explore the house under our watchful gaze we brought the boys up from the basement and let all 3 hounds run the house together. All are getting along perfectly. Sil has seen 3 out of 5 cats and has minimal/no interest. She gave them an inquisitive sniff and moved onto the next new thing. Excellent. Sil does not like the stairs and will need work on them, as to be expected.

Crated Sil and the boys, and went to get a bite to eat. During dinner a thunderstorm rolled in, so we got back home. She was in her crate and showed no ill effect from the thunderstorm. Sil had her first meal and is a very good eater. She eats as a reasonable pace and is not fussy. Took her out to potty and she did her business. Back inside she now has run of the house without her muzzle, but we still keep an eye on her whereabouts.

Still no interest in the cats. She and the boys have fallen in like they have always lived together. I think Dewey (one of our males) has a crush on her.
